I just committed a first stab getting ResourceSpace to correctly convert previews into sRGB for original images with embedded color profiles. (As long as ImageMagick has the options to support it, of course.)
The debate over rendering intents and whatnot is a bit arcane for me, but I think once the basics of this are working it would be easy to add parameters to tweak how the conversions happen. This would allow a fairly consistent process for all files, regardless of whether they had an embedded profile or not.
If the profile wasn't extracted, take a best guess at using one of the above generic profiles based on the type of file and whatever can be gleaned from the exif/xmp metadata. I'm thinking that the best solution is to extract any embedded ICC profile using convert, store it as a separate file in the resource directory, then use this as the source profile for preview generation (stripping the original profile in the process). I'm not sure specifying multiple ICC profiles is a good idea - my understanding is that this makes ImageMagick do multiple color conversions in some situations, which may cause undesirable results. There are also some generic CMYK ones that appear to be fairly liberally licensed.

It looks like the ICC's generic sRGB profiles are available to redistribute under a fairly liberal license (basically you just have to keep their copyright notice and not use their name in advertising.) Specifying multiple ICC files seemed to do the trick. I worked a way round the 'existing profile' condition problem - simply If there are some open source versions that produce good results. The best description I've yet found of how to do this is here It's clearly a hack, but would probably work. And there's not an entirely straightforward way to determine whether there is an embedded profile, or, if so, what it is. In poking around the ImageMagick documentation, it looks like the main challenge to this is that the command structure to convert to a profile is different depending on whether there is an existing color profile in the original image. Ideally, I think ResourceSpace should convert the previews to sRGB if they are not already in this color space. However, since many of our original images are created in the Adobe 1998 color space (which theoretically has a wider color gamut), the preview colors tend to be off from the original. When the browser receives an image without a profile, it tends to assume it will be sRGB and display it accordingly. However, it can cause problems if the original image was not created in sRGB, which has become the de facto web standard color space.
This is purposeful, since in the case of small thumbnails the profile may be bigger than the image.
